Plant shoot-tip temperature is one of the major factors that influence plant morphogenesis, and plant development, can be predicted more accurately using plant shoot-tip temperature instead of air temperature. We developed and reported a model that predicts plant shoot-tip temperature using five environmental factors, such as drybulb temperature, wetbulb temperature, glazing temperature, air velocity, and shortwave radiation.
Although the model contains cuticle resistance of shoot-tips for specific plant species, the valuse of cuticle resistance of plants have been little reported. In the present study, we measured cuticle resistances of plant shoot-tip for five greenhouse crops (Geranium dalmaticum 'Album', Campanula 'Birch Hybrid', Campanula carpatica 'Blue Clips', Viola×wittrockiana, and Kalanchoe blossfeldiana). The measured cuticle resistance varied from 57.8 s/m for Geranium dalmaticum 'Album' to 524.9s/m for Campanula 'Birch Hybrid'. The highest cuticle resistance was 9.5 times that of the lowest resistance.
The wide variation of cuticle resistance indicates that one typicl cuticle resistance cannot be used as the representative in the shoot tip temperature model for any plant specie and that the cuticle resistance of each species is required to predict the shoot-tip temperature of plants.
