Description

Recent advancing urbanization and the desire to preserve living environments and recreational areas have led to a growing demand in society for conservation of urban forests. This study analyzed the history and current state of forest practices in Hokkaido Nopporo Forest Park, a typical Japanese urban forests, and considered future conservation of urban forests and ideal forest practices required to improve forest functions. Although most of the Nopporo Forest Park is a national forest, forest practices after the forest's designation as a park have been quite inactive. Consequently, signs of a variety of problems have developed. These include increasingly undergrown artificial forests a decline of Todo-firs, and deterioration of the quality of natural forests, as seen in increase in dead standing trees. To improve the amenity and recreational features of the Nopporo Forest Park, it is necessary to maintain forest conditions to ensure diversification and high degree of naturalness. For this reason, long-term planning regarding afforestation and management, maintaining ecological stability, and improving forest resources are essential. At the same time, it is necessary to help users gain a deeper understandings of forestry production and to participate in forest management by providing the public with information on forests, including publicizing forest management plans and actual activities.
