Description
Aldo Leopold influenced the designation and development of wilderness areas in the United States. In this paper, the author discusses the development of Leopold's ideas as a means of obtaining public support for wilderness areas. Because it is difficult to generate public understanding of wilderness areas through visual means or mass-visitation as found in national parks, Leopold tried to generate wilderness support by stressing cultural significance and ecological values. As a result, he developed practical strategies to the level of land ethics. However, at the same time, the relation to the actual wilderness area has become weaker. In Japan, this tendency became evident because Leopold's ideas was introduced by ethicists with little understanding of forests or forestry. Foresters need to fill the gap between wilderness ideas and real forests.
