This study aims to develop a seeding inspection system for automatic plug seedling production. As the first part of the study, this paper reports the development of the real time seed miss detection programs. The basic principle of the program was to apply image-processing techniques to segment seeds from their background (nursery bed soil) so that the seed existence or absence in a cavity could be determined.<BR>Algorithms with and without median filter were developed and implemented by two programs A and B written in computer language C. The developed Program A with median filter was able to reduce the image noises (soil particles and fertilizer granules) and ultimately detected the seeds in the cavities. The machine vision system, equipped with the developed seed miss detection programs, was set up and tested using pumpkin, melon, green pepper and coated lettuce seeds.<BR>The experimental result showed that Program A (with median filter) reduced image noises without significantly reducing the seed pixel numbers, especially in the case of NAPURA S type of plug seedling soil. This suggests that using the median filter technique to smoothen the image reduce the risk of misjudgment between image noises and the actual seeds, especially for those seed with relatively small size.
