Abstract
We confirmed the possession of donation cards and proposed the option of non-heart beating kidney donation to the families of twenty-eight potential donor cases. Agreements for the donations were obtained from nineteen cases including two donation card possession cases eventually. Among the nineteen cases, the consent in six cases was based on the affirmative opinions of the patients themselves before their illness and the consent in the other thirteen cases were based on the affirmative opinions of the families. On the other hand, the families of nine cases refused kidney donation because of a negative opinion against organ donation fundamentally. The rate of card pos-session in Japan was eight percent, and the rate of the affirmative opinion to kidney donation was forty-two percent in 2006. However, neurosurgeons confirming a donors card possession or proposing donation as an option is quite rare. Now, most donations depend on the voluntary presentation of the donation card by the families. Therefore, more than tens of thousands of transplantable kidneys have been disposed. The contributions of neurosurgeons for kidney transplantation medicine are expected to increase.
