In addition to launching a separate collection for ‘plastic waste’ through the introduction of mandatory bags, and other measures in Fiscal Year 1999, Numazu was the first city in Japan to start a separate collection for recyclable wastes. More recently in 2003, two more separate ‘plastic waste’ categories were set up, with one collection for ‘plastic containers and packaging’ only, and another for ‘plastics other than plastic containers and packages.’<BR>These measures have created a significant decrease in the amount of plastic waste being mixed into landfill waste. In addition, the start-up of final disposal consignments for incineration ash which began in 2003 means landfill waste amounts in the final disposal site were reduced to 1/5 the volume recorded in Fiscal Year 1998, which was prior to separate collections, and attempts at extending the life of final disposal sites. It should be noted that in June 2005, some of the names and classifications for various sorted wastes were changed.
