Abstract
The purpose of this research considered the importance of the selected image in self-presentation. This study was to examine self-presentation from the following two points; (a) self-evaluation and (b) self-image, represented by speaker and recognized by receipient (intimate or unfamiliar) . Previous studies have dealt self-presentation with the relationship of self-evaluation. In these standpoints, it has focus on the aspect of self. However, it is not the action which can be performed by only speaker, because definition of self-presentation includes perspective from receipient. The investigation methods were self-evaluation test (Rosenberg, 1965) and interview. Participants were five university students. Owing to self-evaluation test, three were regarded as high self-esteem (HSE) , two as intermediate. As the example of questions in interview, I asked participant about (a) what self-image he has shown for the friends who were intimate or unfamiliar, and (b) what he is thought of by them. As a result, the more HSE were, the more good from others'angle they expressed than from their one. Moreover, HSE preferred disagreement rather than agreement, that is, an understanding about content of self-presentation varied between them and recipient (especially, intimate friends) . In self-concept, it's essential that they combine how they have self-image and others recognize their image. Based on these findings, it was suggested that it is important to acquire a variety of self-images from recipient.
