Mouth-opening training is indicated for the rehabilitation of patients suffering from disturbance of mouth opening and closing.<br>For mouth-opening apparatus, we have only conventional mouth gags such as wooden screws, bite blocks and clothespin types, which simply increase mouth-opening distance.<br>Takanishi and Takanobu et al. developed a mastication robot which reproduces the physiological mandibular movement of a human by mechanical means (1986, WJ-O). In order to develop a mouthopening and -closing apparatus using their mastication robot mechanism, we measured mouth-opening ability in clinical cases and posited a standard. Mouth-opening ability which was measured on the mouth-opening side.<br>In the preliminary experiment, we used a wooden device. Under rubber traction at various levels on the load side, mouth-opening ability was measured on the mouth-opening side.<br>The subjects were 17 trismus patients. We measured traction, mouth-opening ability and the range of mouth opening which they could tolerate, and studies the results.<br>The average traction, which was applicable to all the patients, was approximately 0.8kg at a mouth-opening distance of 35mm. This level was posited to be the standard mouth-opening ability in mouth-opening and -closing rehabilitation.
