Description

Cyclopaldic acid (1), 3-O-methyl cyclopolic acid (2) and 4-formyl-5-hydroxy-7-methoxy-6-methyl-phthalide (3) were isolated from cultures of the fungus Penicillium sp. No.13f as plant growth regulators and their structures were established by spectroscopic evidence. Compound 3 was found in nature for the first time. Compound 1 inhibited hypocotyl elongation and root growth of lettuce seedlings by 26% and 6% at a concentration of 100 mg/l, respectively. But compound 2 and 3 showed no inhibitory activity at the same concentration. Furthermore, compound 1 and 3 completely inhibited the growth of lettuce seedlings at a concentration of 1000 mg/l, but compound 2 did not show any remarkable inhibitory activity at the same concentration. These results indicated that the substituents at C-3 and C-4 was essential to exhibit the inhibitory activity against the growth of lettuce seedlings.
