Abstract

Benzobicyclon is a novel paddy bleaching herbicide and shows excellent herbicidal activity at low doses (200-300 gai/ha) against grass, sedge and annual broadleaf weeds, especially Scirpus juncoides which is difficult to control season-long using other herbicides. It shows an excellent efficacy on S. juncoides with a wide application window from pre-emergence up to 5-leaf stage, and with good selectivity for transplanted rice. Herbicidal persistency of Benzobicyclon against S. juncoides was found eight weeks after application. Moreover, it shows an excellent herbicidal activity against Aneilema keisak and some perennial gramineous weeds such as Leersia japonica and Leersia oryzoides, which invaded into paddy field from levee and currently considered to be very troublesome weeds. At present, Benzobicyclon is considered to be an only paddy herbicide which shows an efficacy against L. japonica among the existing paddy herbicides.
