説明

An outbreak of acute enteritis caused by Vero cytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli was occurred at a private kindergarten in Urawa city. E. coli O157: H7 strains were isolated from children and well water at the kindergarten. To clarify the states of pollution by E. coli, isolation of pathogenic E. coli was attempted on 92 samples of well water collected in Saitama Prefecture during the period from October, 1990 to May, 1991. Pathogenic E. coli was not isolated from any sample.
For investigation of water-borne infection, laboratory studies were periodically conducted on some selected isolates to clarify the growth of E.coli in various kinds of water. E. coli O55 and O157 survived in well water for over 30 days. They survived in physiological saline and in sterile distilled water for 50 days.
E. coli O55, O153 and O157 disappeared within 30 seconds after inoculation from tap water containing 0.2 mg/L residual chlorine. These results show that E. coli cannot survive in tap water containing 0.2 mg/L residual chlorine.
