At low tide in May 2013, we investigated the limited habitats of two species of crabs, Acmaeopleura parvula Stimpson, 1858 and Cyclograpsus intermedius Ortmann, 1894, at the southern coastal area of Enoshima Island, Sagami Bay, Kanagawa Prefecture, central Japan. We recorded 56 live crabs (40 A. parvula and 16 C. intermedius) at 26 localities throughout the study area. All the crabs lived under stones in the central and higher parts of the intertidal zone. Their habitats were often on firm wet gravel in fresh or brackish water. We found more than 26 coastal species, including the 2 crab species, and 3 species-Ligia exotica Roux, 1828, Monodonta confusa Tapparone-Canefri, 1874, and Hemigrapsus sanguineus De Haan, 1835-often lived together near the crabs. Most species were also living in brackish water. These habitats with freshwater underflow from land may be rarer than common tidelands and sandy beaches.
