We investigated the relationship between the pinnnotherid crab Pinnixa rathbuni and its host tube worms (Terebellidae sp.) by culturing them in transparent plastic tanks. The worms were placed in tanks with a small quantity of mud to allow them to build mud tubes (nests) along the walls of the tanks. Then, some crabs and the worms were released in the tanks and observed on their activities. The crabs activated around in tanks independently of the position of worm tubes. The crabs fitted themselves within the tubes of the worms and used the tubes for shelter when threatened. Further, the crabs sometimes destroyed the tube and expelled the host worms from the tubes. The ratio of the crabs having a symbiotic relationship with the worms was not high (average 19.6%). Some crabs did not depend on the tubes at all, and others could live in and skillfully use the tubes without the worms.
