Description
The authors investigated the clinical course of 46 patients with a peritonsillar abscess (PTA) using CT findings. These patients had been admitted to our hospital between January 2006 and March 2013. The cohort consisted of 32 males and 14 females, aged 18 to 88 (mean age, 39.9 years old).
Administration of antibiotics (non-surgical group) was performed in 20 cases. Along with administration of antibiotics, removal of the abscess was performed by needle aspiration and/or incision for drainage (surgical group) in 26 cases.
The average of hospitalization period was 7.7 days in the needle aspiration group and 6.9 days in the incision for drainage group. There was no statistical difference between both groups in the average hospitalized period.
This study suggested that treatment with needle aspiration might be as effective as incision for drainage.
