Glycidyl methacrylate was grafted onto a porous hollow-fiber membrane made of polyethylene by radiation-induced graft polymerization. Subsequently, a series of epoxy groups were modified with chelate-forming ligands by a reaction with 2, 2'-iminodiethanol (IDE), di-2-propanolamine (DPA), and N-methylglucamine (NMG) . Porous membranes with various Chelating group densities and permeation fluxes were obtained by changing degrees of GMA grafting and molar conversions. For example, the porous membrane containing DPA group with the density of 2mol/kg exhibited the pure water flux 50% of the trunk membrane. The overall adsorption rate of germanium onto the chelating porous membrane was increased with an increase of permeation rate of the germanium solution because of remarkably low diffusional mass-transfer resistance.
