Abstract

To clarify the effects of saline accumulation in groundwater by evapotranspiration in Mu Us Desert, China, electric conductivity, saline concentration and oxygen and hydrogen stable isotope ratios of groundwater in dune and grassland zones that were the typical ground cover conditions of this area were measured. The dune groundwater was not affected by evaporation and the saline was not concentrated. On the other hand, the saline of grassland groundwater was concentrated by the influences of evapotranspiration. The relationship of chloride concentration and deuterium excess in the groundwater shows that evaporation is the more dominant process in the increase of the saline concentrations of grassland groundwater than transpiration. Comparing the saline concentrations of the groundwater collected from two points within the grassland zone which have same evaporation potential, the saline concentration of the groundwater collected in the nearer point to the dune was lower. These facts suggest that the dune groundwater flows into the grassland groundwater.
