The ultrasonic estimates of carcass traits between the6th and the7th rib of 172 and 225 Japanese Black bulls on performancetesting collected from Miyazaki and Kagoshima Prefectural Experiment Stations from 1988 to 1994 were analyzed to clarify the genetictrends. Carcass traits estimated wereM. longissimus thoracis area (MLTA), rib thickness (RT), subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT), intermuscular fat thickness (IMFT) and beef marbling score (BMS) . The heritability estimates were calculated by multi-trait animal modelREML.<BR>The heritability of ultrasonic estimates of MLTA, RT, SFT, IMFT and BMS were 0.19 and 0.37, 0.20 and 0.17, 0.52 and 0.57, 0.23 and 0.05, and 0.38 and 0.21 for Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures, respectively. The genetic trends of RT and SFT were almost the same in both prefectures. The breeding value of sire for BMS fluctuated in Miyazaki prefecture, while it was found to be fluctuating for all traits examined in Kagoshima prefecture. Estimation of breeding values of sire, dam and bull for ultrasonic estimates of carcass traits were quite low, probably due to the limited number of performance tested bulls which were ultrasonically scanned.
