Abstract

A series of feeding trials have been conducted to evaluate the effect of activated charcoal (AC) on growth performances of Japanese Brown cattle fed concentrate-based diets at the middle stage of fattening. In trial 1, two treatment diets with and without AC involving 2 paddocks with 8 steers each were subjected to two experimental seasons (cool and warm) for 245 days using change-over experimental design. A marked effect of 0.3% AC incorporated in diet was noted on the daily gain. Feed intake tended to decrease by the addition of AC. The seasonal variations for daily gain and feed intake were insignificant. In addition, feed efficiency was also improved for the diets with AC. In trial 2, two treatments (0, 0.3%AC) using 5 animals in each group which were at the middle stage of fattening were examined for a 143 day fattening period. The results have shown that the provision of 0.3% AC did not improve the daily gain of the experimental animals. The effect of AC on feed intake and feed conversion was not observed. In trial 3, the animals at the middle stage of fattening were grouped into 2 diets, having 5 and 6 animals with and without AC, respectively with an experimental period of 62 days. The inclusion of 0.5% AC in the diets tended to improve the daily gain and feed conversion ratio, especially during the first month of fattening period. The feed intake for both groups was similar.
