Description

Chrysosplenium pseudopilosum, a new species with two varieties of Chrysosplenium from Gifu and Kyoto prefectures, central Honshu, Japan, is described. The species belongs to ser. Pilosa, and is characterized by having a greenish, campanulate calyx, the calyx lobes nearly as long as the calyx tube, roundish or subtruncate calyx lobes, the stamens and styles exserted beyond the calyx lobes, yellow anthers, and a 1/4 inferior to nearly superior ovary. This combination of floral characters is not found in any other species of ser. Pilosa. Because of the nearly superior position of the ovary which is very rare in the genus, the new species is considered to be most closely related to C. album, and inferred to link between C. album and C. rhabdospermum. A new variety, var. divaricatistylosum from the city of Kyoto, Kyoto Pref., differs from the typical variety in Gifu Pref. in having larger flowers (ca. 4.6 mm across versus 3.5-3.8 mm across in var. pseudopilosum), sparsely hairy calyx (versus glabrous), styles on the capsule distinctly divaricate at angle of 140° to almost 180° (versus 50° to 80°), and hardly sulcate seeds (versus sulcate).
