Description
Cytological observations in the Aster ageratoides complex in northeastern Yunnan, China, revealed diploids, tetraploids and octoploids (based on x=9) in this region. Among the 17 plants collected from eight populations, there were four diploids, seven tetraploids and six octoploids. All of them were identified as A. ageratoides var. laticorymbus. In the A. ageratoides complex, diploids are also known in more than five species and two infraspecific taxa from Japan, Taiwan, and Korea. The wide distribution and variation of the diploids in the A. ageratoides complex suggests that the distributional expansion was prior to or in concert with polyploidization and speciation.
