Description

The objective of this experiment was to study the effect of heat stress on P, Ca, Mg and bone metabolism of dairy cow around the time of parturition or during early lactation. Experiment 1: Three Holsteins due to calve under ambient moderate temperature and three Holsteins due to calve under high ambient temperature were used in this experiment. The experiment was performed from 7 days before the expected calving date to 4 days after parturition. The DMI of dairy cows calved under high ambient temperature significantly (P<0.05) decreased than that under moderate ambient temperature. The heat stress did not have apparent effects on milk yield and composition. Plasma concentration of Mg and osteocalcin (OC) of cows calved under high ambient temperature was significantly lower (P<0.05) than those under moderate ambient temperature. Experiment 2 : Three Holsteins calved under moderate ambient temperature and five Holsteins calved under high ambient temperature were used in this experiment. The experiment was performed from 4 or 5 days after parturition to 28 days after parturition. The DMI, milk yield and milk Mg concentration of dairy cows calved under high ambient temperature were significantly (P<0.05) lower than those under moderate ambient temperature. The concentrations of plasma Mg and OC of cows calved under high ambient temperature were significantly (P<0.05) lower that those under moderate ambient temperature. These results suggest that heat stress adversely affect on mineral and bone metabolism of dairy cows in the periparturient period.
