Description

The staminal filaments of 13 species, including six varieties and one form, of the genus Polygonatum from Japan, Taiwan and Cheju Island (Korea) were examined morphologically. The filaments of P. cryptanthum, P. involucratum, P. falcatum and P. trichosanthum (all with x=9) are thickened upwards, and possess projections mainly on the upper part, where all or part of the epidermal cell surface is protruding, capped with a thick cuticular layer. Longitudinal sections of the upper part of the filaments revealed that the tissue consists of more or less irregular-shaped polyhedral cells. P. cyrtonema, P. macranthum and P. inflatum (all with x=11) have the filaments thickened downwards, which are covered with hairs or projections mainly on the lower portions. The hairs are multicellular-uniseriate. Only part of the epidermal cell surface is protruding, forming inconspicuous processes or typical projections. Both the hairs and projections possess a thin cuticular layer. Longitudinal sections showed that the filament tissues consist of elongated cells throughout their whole length, P. humile, P. odoratum and P. lasianthum (all with x=10) possess filaments that are thickened in the middle or continue without thickening and are also covered with multicellular-uniseriate hairs or partial projections. The projections possess a cuticular layer intermediate in thickness. The filaments of P. desoulavyi var. azegamii, P. domonense and P. miserum, with 2n=18 or 2n=19 somatic chromosomes and asymmetric karyotypes, are variable in shape and mosaic in distribution of hairs and projections. These filament characters are well correlated with basic chromosome numbers, reflecting their affinities.
