Abstract

The chromosome number, karyotype, sexuality and the type of hibernacula of 263 strains of Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle collected throughout Japan were investigated in order to reveal the variations of each of these characteristics and to find their mutual correlation. The results are summarized as follows : (1) While dioecious strains were widespread all through Japan, the distribution of monoecious ones was restricted to southwestern Japan being especially frequent in northern part of Kyushu. (2) The type of hibernacula was closely associated with the sexuality. That is, dioecious strains always formed axillary turions and monoecious ones tubers. (3) The chromosome number of dioecious strains was either 16 or 24. Triploid (2n=24) was more frequent than diploid (2n=16) in both male and female strains. On the other hand monoecious strains were all triploid (2n=24). (4) Monoecious and dioecious strains were not distinguishable by cytological characteristics such as the choromosome number and karyotype.
