Description
The purpose of this study is to clarify how the practical cases provided by nurses were discussed in the case review conference in pediatric nursing and how they were in turn utilized in actual clinical settings by the case presenters. Among the presenters who provided cases, five pediatric nurses were semi-structurally interviewed and the contents were qualitatively analyzed. As a result, five themes were identified: [1] Encouraging nurses to express negative emotions and share them with colleagues; [2] Informing colleagues of care strategies that enable children to maximize their abilities, by specifying in care records the details of how they interact with children in daily settings with a stage of development under consideration; [3] After making effort in ensuring a consensus among their colleagues, case providers discussed a new standpoint in nursing conference; [4] To make use of other professionals' view for nursing, establishing communication network in other professionals who cares sick children, and facilitating the exchange of their opinions; [5] Verbal transmission of the nurses' unconscious practice so as to help nurses understand the importance of daily care for patients. These findings suggest that the development of child and family practices should be based on careful consideration of the way each ward is organized, and also that it is vital to discuss what schemes best suit the ward in case review conference.
