Abstract

Problems with the introduction of mammography for breast cancer screening in Nishinomiya City were investigated. In Nishinomiya, breast cancer screening had been carried out by clinical examination, but after guidelines for breast cancer screening using mammography were issued by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in 2000, breast specialists and members of the medical association and city government discussed the introduction of mammography. After setting the budget, appointing qualified radiologic technologists and reading doctors and providing education for the citizens, screening mammography started in July 2001. However, there are still several problems. The first is how to treat women in their thirties and forties, the second, is whether screening mammography should be performed in a general or private hospital and the third is recruitment of enough qualified radiologic technologists and reading doctors. These problems should be solved and breast cancer screening using mammography should be expanded.
