Abstract

Recently, bad smell is deteriorating environment. Although GC/MS (Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrum) method is often used to analyze gases, a more rapid and lower-cost method is desired. Since a gas detector tube technique is well known as a simple method for gas measurement, we focused on it to perform bad-smell sensing for monitoring the living environment. A gas concentration is visually obtained by reading the length of the color-changed layer. We developed a simple system for automatically measuring the color change in the gas detector tube using an optical scanner. In the present study, the interference between the target and other substance was studied. The result suggests that the quantitative analysis without the interference is feasible, utilizing the difference of the reaction time between the two analytes. Moreover, the sensitivity of the gas detector tube was studied. We confirmed the cumulative effect of gas detector tube and it was possible to measure methyl merchantman with its concentration less than 32 ppb.
