Description

Improvement of computer graphics and virtual reality technologies has developed many medical systems such as surgical planning, training and navigation. Surgical simulator is one of the systems, with which surgeons can train for surgeries without real patients. There are lots of surgical simulators developed until now; however, their focuses are on the deformation of organs such as heart, lung and liver. Blood vessel deformation or bleeding is not considered on the systems. Therefore, this paper suggests a fast rendering method of bleeding for surgical simulators. The method is based on Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS). Particle methods generally take huge time to search neighborhood particles for simulation of incompressible fluid and to render smooth surface of particles. Then, hash function is used to solve the former problem and Z buffer, which is a memory that holds the depth values from eye position, is used to generate smooth surface in order to solve the latter one. Finally, the result of the experiments shows that real-time rendering of bleeding is possible on condition that the number of particles is under 2,000 even with the normal PC.
