Description

Earlier HMDs were not sufficient to present the realistic information with wide space, because an HMD could not give the information of the far peripheral vision which would influence the postural control. We hypothesized that the far peripheral vision influencing the sense of equilibrium was important from the view point of the postural stability when the HMD was used. For these reasons, we have developed the HMD with 140 degrees of binocular visual field angle so that it can present the visual stimulation to the far peripheral vision. We studied the influence of the peripheral vision on the postural control by using real images obtained from a CCD camera. As the result, it was confirmed that the far peripheral vision could affect the sense of equilibrium even when the wide view HMD was used, and it was found to be necessary to present the visual stimulation to the far peripheral vision using the wide view HMD to get more realistic spatial image.
