Sniffing, a voluntary inhalation of air through the nose, is an active sensing behavior strongly controlled depending on behavioral and stimulus context. Sniffing-coupled sub-threshold electrical activity is found in mitral/tufted cells in the rodent olfactory bulb (OB), and it strongly affects odor-evoked spatiotemporal patterns of their spikes, i.e., odor information representation. Here, using a biologically plausible neuron model, we examined how sub-threshold rhythmic activity (mimicking sniffing-coupled activity) affects onset latency of neuronal spike evoked by odor mimicking input. Simulation results indicate that the sub-threshold rhythmic activity makes input-latency relationship to be linear in wide range of input strength, and by changing temporal features of the sub-threshold activity, the input-latency relationship vary in a regular way. These imply that odor information representation in the OB might be easily and precisely controllable by changing the sniffing-coupled sub-threshold activity.
