Abstract

Over the past many years there has been a concerted effort to preserve and utilize business archives in the United Kingdom. This article looks at these efforts and, in particular, introduces the national strategy and specific practices scheme for business archives in the United Kingdom and the historical background surrounding their development. Moreover, the article explores the history of and practical problems confronting business archives in Japan. Through a comparison of the strategies and methods employed in the two countries, the article aims to provide suggestions for the future of business archives in Japan, in particular the building of a "Japanese National Business Archives Register" as a shared platform contributing to cooperation between and integration of business archives. At the same time, the article also looks at the Teikoku Databank Historical Museum as a case study to show the possibility of building a register of business archives in Japan.
