Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of factors related to surgery and comorbidity on the length of preoperative hospital stay and clarify the factors affecting it in patients undergoing laparoscopic gastrectomy. We studied the data of 21 patients who underwent surgery for gastric malignancy at our institution from July 2008 to March 2012. When the patients were classified into two groups, namely, the group with comorbidity and the group without comorbidity, it was found that the preoperative hospital stay median was significantly longer in the comorbidity group as compared with that in the no-comorbidity group (4.0 days vs. 3.0 days; Mann-Whitney's U test: p<0.05). Next, we performed multiple regression analysis to identify the factors that might affect the length of preoperative hospital stay, and the analysis identified concomitant diabetes major factors. The results suggested that the glycemic control status exerted significant influence on the length of preoperative hospital stay in patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery for gastric malignancy.
