This article focuses on the methodology behind my recent work, The Theory of the Hospital Century (2010). This article analyses that the work is strategically structured to develop a specific research question into a set of more general research ones as it goes along, which results in generating a new paradigm, resituating the former as a subcategory of the latter. This paradigm-generating strategy, along with three other strategies complementing it, has the fundamental effect on whether the work makes a significant academic contribution. The article also implies that research strategies in general are essential for the researchers of social sciences, especially for those of social policy and sociology that have no standardized methodology.
