Description
The tropical fruit, Camu-Camu (Myraciaria dubia), is a potential source of bioactive compounds such as L-ascorbic acid, flavonoids and ellagic acid. This study focused on the blood pressure-lowering action of the juice of Camu-Camu fruits and its underlying mechanisms. Oral administration of Camu-Camu juice for 5 weeks to spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) resulted in significant decreases in systolic and diastolic blood pressures, whereas it did not affect normal rats. Supplementation of Camu-Camu juice did not show significant differences in the activities of aortal nitric oxide synthase (NOS), plasma angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), and aortal angiotensin II type 1 (AT_1) receptor protein expressions in the SHR. However, the expression of endothelial NOS (eNOS) proteins in the aorta of SHR significantly increased when administered Camu-Camu juice as compared to water control. These results might suggest that the increase in eNOS proteins for SHR was associated with the lowering of blood pressures by oral administration of Camu-Camu juice. Further studies are warranted to investigate the active components in the Camu-Camu juice.
