Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explain how two properties of apparel-physical and aesthetic-are related. For this purpose, both objective and subjective aspects of blouse fabrics were measured: mechanical properties and visual images of texture. The relation between the two was also examined. Thirty-six types of white fabric were used as samples to prevent colors and patterns from affecting the results. The subjects of the visual examination (visual ratings through SD method) were 22 experts.
The results were as follows:
1. Texture was related to most items of mechanical characteristics.
2. All three factors of texture-thickness, surface roughness and fullness-were highly related to mechanical characteristics.
3. Most mechanical characteristic values showed high contribution ratios to texture.
4. Texture of blouse fabrics was classified into 4 clusters by cluster analysis.
5. A review of the relation between each cluster and mechanical characteristics indicated that texture was deeply related to surface properties and thickness.
