Abstract

As a cause of erosion damage on manganese bronze coated tailshaft sleeves of the ships built after the termination of the War may be enumerated the relative vibrations of the tailshaft to the hull. On seven ships we have measured such relative vibrations just ahead of the stern tube using the cantilever type pickups with strain-gauges and also at the same time horizontal hull vibrations were measured by strain gauge type hull vibrographs and recorded on the same oscillo papers. By analyzing these oscillograms the aspect of relative vibrations of the tailshaft to the hull have been visualized and the effect of the higher order vibration of the hull on these relative vibrations have been ascertained to a certain extent.
