Description
A survey was conducted involving citizens of Nagasaki City to examine their attitudes toward the landscape of the city and its issues by analyzing the influence of generational differences and length of residence on them. As a result, the attitudes toward the landscape significantly varied among generations and individuals with different lengths of residence; aged or longtime residents demonstrated high levels of interest in the landscape. Attitudes toward the protection of the landscape were more affirmative in citizens demonstrating higher levels of interest, pride, and attachment regarding the landscape. Their focus on the landscape varied in terms of historical/cultural streets, shopping centers, waterfronts, parks, and residential areas, according to the view. The presence of a large number of electric wires and telegraph poles was pointed out as a problem regarding the entire landscape of the city. Concern over abnormal weather, environmental pollution, a decrease in resources, industrial waste, house exteriors, and food safety was greater in citizens showing higher levels of interest in the landscape than the others. These results demonstrate the association between attitudes toward the landscape and concerns related to environmental/social issues, safety, and comfort.
