Description

For examining the dynamic property of the launching fat, the sliding test is commonly used. However, this method has a few drawbacks, namely the friction force cannot directly be measured and the frictions taking place on an actual vessel cannot well be exhibited in the tests, because of the short length of the friction line of the slider and no consideration being given to the frictional heat. In our research, the straight frictional motion in the sliding test was substituted by the rotational motion around the center of the torous test plate. A small sized friction testing machine was designed and manufactured for trial. It measures the resultant friction force, frictional temperature and abrasion amount of fat at an arbitrary static pressure and friction velocity. The fat intended to apply for ships to be built by I.H.I. was used for preparing the disc test plates, and the static friction test was conducted to measure the friction force and frictional temperature at several combinations of frictional pressure and friction velocity for comparison. Study was made on the qualitative tendencies which are common to each of the test results obtained in the experiment.
