抄録

This paper describes the effect of steering speed on rudder performance, revealed by a experiment using a free running, self-propelled model. Comparing with steady lift and unsteady one calculated by Theodorsen's method, the difference, which is attributed to the unsteadiness, i.e., angular motion, is negligible for ordinary steering speed. However, according to the experiments employing the free model, the rudder performance, especially rudder torque, is affected with steering speed, because the modol motion is changed by the variation of steering speed.
