Description

In the design of diesel cargo ship, the load of winches has great influence on the decision of auxiliary boiler and main generator capacity. In this paper, the author explains a theoretical calculation method by figure on the load factor of winch. Some important points in this method are as follows. This load factor is f = (W_S)/(W_R), where f = Load factor of winch, W_S = Demanded steam or electric power consumption of all winches at service condition, and W_R = Rated steam or electric power consumption of all winches at full load condition. For calculation of the theoretical load factor, the author assumes the following. 1. Cargo handling method is "Burtoning method" or "Swinging derrick method." 2. When using two winches for one gang, each winch is not to be driven in full power at the same time. 3. The operating factor is indicated by the equation L = (0.5n+2) / n, where L = Operating factor, and n = Number of winches. 4. Cargo weight and hook speed are assumed by Fig's 5 and, 6 which are plotted by operating results. 5. Partial load efficiency of winch is assumed as Fig. 7. With these assumptions, Fig. 10 "Calculation figure of standard load factor" is drawn.
