Description

A survey regarding the necessity awareness of general education and an evaluation of the current major system has been carried out for the undergraduate students of the mechanical engineering departments of the National Universities in the Chugoku-Shikoku area. The results showed that the students tended to have opposing opinions; the first being that general education is merely a part of the preliminary education process taken before the major, while the second is common sense. In spite of their opposing opinions, most of the students wanted a little more freedom in their choices of lectures and courses. It was considered that this trend was related to the existence of "General Students." In consideration of the desire of students to have more flexibility in course selections, we may need to seriously consider making changes to the current education system and evaluation.
