Visionary Leaders for Manufacturing (VLFM) program is a breakthrough project in management education in India. This paper describes the factors behind the successful inauguration of this project in year 2007. The realization of the project followed three clear phases common in most successful breakthrough projects, (idea generation, technical feasibility and market feasibility). This paper describes the critical factors responsible for breakthrough in each phase. In addition, the project was supported by three environmental factors essential for success : program implementation synchronized with the take-off of Indian industry, outsider's view with inside experience of the initiator, and strong common noble mindset, to contribute to society, among key persons.
