Description

Constituent elements were determined in the edible river weed “KAWANORI” (Prasiola japonica YATABE) from mountain streams of the Katsuura River in Tokushima Prefecture and in the popular sea weed “ASAKUSANORI”. Neutron activation was mainly used in the analysis. In both weeds, Na, K, Mg, Al, P, Cl, Ca, Fe and Zn were the main elements (more than 50 ppm on dry weight basis), and the levels of Mn, As and Sr were more than 10 ppm. The sea weed contained more K and halogens than the river weed, while the latter contained more Al, Ca, Fe, Co, Ni and Zn. The mineral contents of stream water samples of the Katsuura River were also analyzed. Water samples where the river weed grew contained higher concentrations of the elements than downstream regions where the river weed did not grow, except for Fe, Rb and Cs.
