This report deals with the effect of high electric fields on the germination of plant seeds, especially hulled rice seeds. Varieties of rice seeds used were Hatsunishiki, Toyonishiki, Sasa-nishiki, Akihikari, Koganemochi, Kochihibiki, Koshihikari, Hidekomochi, Sasaminori, Kiyo-nishiki and Norin No. 21.
The depressive effects of high electric fields on germination varied with voltage, addition time, electric capacity, variety of rice seeds, steeping time and the rate of water absorption into rice seeds. The depressive effect on hulled Toyonishiki was highest when the seeds were steeped for 2_??_4hr in distilled water, while the effect decreased when steeped for more than 2_??_4hr.
It seems that the depressive effect was decreased during the process of germination.
