Description
The adsorption of heavy metal ions, alkaline earth metal ions and alkali metal ions by chitin phosphate and chitosan phosphate was investigated in comparison with chitin, chitosan and cellulose phosphate. The results obtained are as follows.
(1) Phosphorylated polysaccharides (chitin phosphate, chitosan phosphate and cellulose phosphate) captured strongly the heavy metal ions, Cu2+, Mn2+, Co2+, Cd2+, Zn2+, Ni2+, Cr3+, comared with chitin and chitosan which do not have the phosphate group in their molecule. Of these phosphorylated polysaccharides, chitosan phosphate was the most excellent adsorbent for the chromic ion.
(2) Chitosan phosphate captured strongly the alkali metal ions, Li+, Na+ and K+, compared with other two phosphorylated polysaccharides.
(3) The alkaline earth metal ions, Mg2+, Ca2+ and Sr2+ were also adsorbed by the above mentioned three phosphorylated polysaccharides.
(4) The adsorption of heavy metal ions by chitin phosphate was very rapid during the first 10_??_20 min.
(5) Some factors affecting the adsorption of cupric ion by chitin phosphate were examined. (a) The adsorption ratio for Cu2+ was very high in the concentration range from 0 to 50 ppm of Cu2+ in the solution. (b) The adsorption ratio for Cu2+ increased with increment of the amount of adsorbent. (c) The adsorption of Cu2+ was not so affected by temperature. (d) The adsorption ratio for Cu2+ decreased at low pH region. (e) The adsorption ratio for Cu2+ decreased by the coexistence of sodium sulfate and sodium chloride.
