The utilization of α-olefins by yeasts belonging to Candida sp. was investigated and compared with that of n-paraffins. Candida tropicalis IFO 0589 was found to grow well on 1-tetradecene and produce citric acid as well as from n-tetradecane. The amounts of total citrates (citrate+isocitrate) produced from 1-tetradecene and n-tetradecane attained to 40g/liter and 48g/liter, respectively, when a culture medium containing each substrate 6 (v/v)% was employed. Candida lipolytica IFO 0746, on the other hand, which was able to accumulate 47g/liter of citrates in the expense of n-tetradecane, grew on 1-tetradecene as well as on n-tetradecane, but could not produce citrates from 1-tetradecene.<br> C. tropicalis was found to require biotin and not thiamine for the growth, while C. lipolytica, as reported already, required thiamine and not biotin for the growth. The ratio of citrate to isocitrate accumulated in the expense of 1-tetradecene by C. tropicalis was markedly affected by these growth factors, and the amounts of accumulation of citrate and isocitrate were 22g/liter and 13g/liter, respectively, in the presence of biotin only, while 17g/liter of citrate and 22g/liter of isocitrate were accumulated in the presence of biotin and thiamine.
