1) Several monohydric phenols were tested for their ability to support growth of Trichosporon cutaneum WY 2-2. The organism could utilize phenol (0.1%), m- and p-hydroxybenzoates (0.1%), m- and p-cresols (0.04%), m- and p-nitrophenols (0.01%) and o- and p-chlorophenols (0.01%) but not o-derivatives except o-chlorophenol. The strain has a lower tolerance to cresols compared with that of phenol; growth of the strain is inhibited with cresol concentrations higher than 0.05%. The tolerance against nitrophenols or chlorophenols is considerably lower (0.01%).
2) The ability of strains belonging to the Trichosporon, Candida and Rhodotorula to utilize phenol and cresols was examined. All strains tested could not grow on o-cresol. Therefore it appears that their incapability to utilize o-isomers is a universal character.
3) p-Hydroxybenzoate and benzoate were investigated for their ability to support growth of Trichosporon and Candida strains. The results showed that T. cutaneum strains possessed the ability to assimilate both phenol and hydroxysubstituted benzoates but Candida strains could utilize phenol but not hydroxysubstituted benzoates as growth substrates.
4) The oxidation of various aromatic compounds by washed cell suspensions of T. cutaneum WY 2-2 was examined. The results showed that WY 2-2 oxidized well many phenolic compounds and the enzymes of the degradative pathways of the phenolic compounds were induced by growing on the same substrates.
