抄録

A rising-film tubular reactor was used for sulfation of fatty saturated higher alcohol with a gas mixture of SO3 gas and air. The selectivity of sulfation was studied. The sulfation is accompanied by side reactions which reduce the yield of alkyl ether sulfate. A quantitative study was carried out on the presumption that the alkyl ether sulfate reacts further with SO3 to form inactive products.<BR>The ratio of reaction rate constants between the main and the side reactions was obtained quantitatively and it was found that the side reaction proceeds more rapidly at higher temperature.<BR>It was made clear that an industrial large-scale reactor should be designed as a reactor consisting of a plurality of parallel tubes with smaller diameter because the reaction temperature rises with increasing tube diameter.
