On biological treatment of dialysis wastewater by fluidized-bed with polyurethane support particles, effects of substrate loading, particle size and the particle cell numbers on treatment characteristics were investigated, focussing on microbial growth in earlier- to steady-state stages. In addition, the progress of microbial phase retained in particles was evaluated by microscopic observation of change in predominantly inhabiting protozoa. Retained and suspended microbes proliferate with swing variation in their amounts. The amount of retained microbes takes larger values at larger particle cell numbers. Stable microbial phase occurs in larger-size particles rather than in smaller ones. Retained and suspended microbes increase with substrate loading, but with the ratio of retained to suspended microbes decreasing. In the earlier stage, motile bacteria and free-swimming ciliates increase predominantly, whereas in the steady state stage, floc-forming bacteria and stalked ciliates do the same.
