Abstract

Vapor-liquid equilibria of ethanol and aqueous ethanol solutions containing a minute amount of ethyl palmitate, ethyl oleate and ethyl linoleate were measured by use of an Othmer-type still at atmospheric pressure.
The equilibrium ratio of the minor component in ethanol becomes approximately constant below the concentration of 1.5 × 10-4 mole fraction (0.093 wt %) for ethyl palmitate, 1.5 × 10-4 mole fraction (0.10 wt %) for ethyl oleate, and 0.7 × 10-4 mole fraction (0.047 wt %) for ethyl linoleate. The constant values for these components are 1.63 × 10-3, 1.36 × 10-3 and 1.07 × 10-3, respectively.
In the experiments with aqueous ethanol solutions, because of the solubility of the esters the ethanol concentration was limited to the range from 40 to 100 mol %. The concentrations of ethyl palmitate and ethyl oleate in the charge were 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2 wt %, and that of ethyl linoleate was 0.1 wt %. It is shown that the equilibrium ratio curves of the esters studied are remarkably affected by the concentration of the ester in the charge.
