Abstract

Heat transfer to liquid-solid two-phase mixtures flowing down vertical copper tubes was investigated experimentally using spherical glass beads (0.151.0 mm in diameter) and ion exchange resin (0.5 mm in diameter). Test tubes of 8, 12.8 and 19 mm diameter were used. Reynolds number ranged from 600 to 20, 000; delivered volumetric solid concentration up to 0.1.<BR>It was found that correlations between Nusselt number Nu and Reynolds number Re were classified into two groups as follows. (1) In the case of beads larger than 0.3 mm in diameter, the relationships of Nu vs. Re were linear on logarithmic paper in the range of Re from 600 to 10, 000. In this region, Nu of two-phase suspension was larger than that of water flowing alone in the tubes. At Re above 10, 000, Nu gradually approached that of water with increasing Re. (2) At bead diameter below 0.2 mm, the relationships between Nu and Re were illustrated by an S-curve on logarithmic paper. Nu of two-phase suspension sometimes fall below that of water in some Re range.
